How to choose a hot tub in Cleveland

Cleveland skyline

People of all ages enjoy the therapeutic and recreational benefits of hot tubs. If you’re suffering from a condition such as arthritis, you may find the massage jets and hydrotherapy options soothing. Some health insurance plans cover the cost of a hot tub if a doctor deems it medically necessary.

Before installing a hot tub, you should be aware that Cuyahoga County requires licenses for pools or spas serving four families or more. Regulations in Cleveland only require permits for pools holding more than 1,500 gallons of water, so few hot tubs, which hold an average of between 400 and 500 gallons of water, will require a permit.

How difficult it is to install a hot tub may depend on which type you purchase. Models that use 120-volt electricity are considered plug-and-play and are compatible with existing outlets, but 240-volt models require an electrician to run a hard-wired connection. Most hot tubs are filled with a garden hose and do not require any plumbing modifications.

There may also be other requirements from utility companies. First Energy, Cleveland’s largest electrical provider, does not allow hot tubs to be located within 25 feet of the utility’s overhead conductors or five feet of its underground cabling. Consult your hot tub dealer about any additional requirements.

Today’s tubs are primarily durable plastic, vinyl or high-gloss acrylic material. For harsh Cleveland winters, cheaper vinyl options lack durability and may not retain enough heat. Manufacturers offer many features, including cushioned seats, varying numbers of massage jets and slip-resistant entry stairs. The price of your hot tub will affect the options available to you.

Classification Price Range Common Characteristics
Entry-level $3,000 - $5,000
  • Affordability may attract first-time buyers
  • Limited features
  • Typically constructed of molded sturdy plastic
Value $4,000 - $8,000
  • More attractive material options
  • Some premium features are included but may lack energy efficiency
  • Performs reliably for years when properly maintained
  • Premium $6,000 - $10,000
    • Long-lasting quality and good warranty coverage
    • Expanded comfort and features, including dynamic jets and lighting
    • Enhanced energy efficiency
    Luxury $9,000 - $16,000
    • Will last for 10 or more years
    • Highest quality massage jets
    • Latest filtration system technology

Exterior installation requires a strong, level surface, such as a reinforced deck or concrete slab, as well as access to electricity and water. Local dealers can verify the surface and electrical requirements and professionally install your hot tub. Expect to pay around $200 for an electrician to install a hard-wired outlet. Many people choose to maintain their own hot tub, including testing its chemical levels and cleaning or replacing filters, but most dealerships also provide maintenance service.
